WHO IS PASCASIO
Pascasio Trujillo Sarmiento was born in 1899 on the tiny island of La Gomera, part of Spain’s Canary Islands. He travelled widely throughout Europe, and in the late 1920s established the Spanish-language press bureau Servicios Periodísticos in Berlin. There, in the early 1930s, the recently elected fascist government offered Pascasio the opportunity to expand his print news services by broadcasting to the world weekly radio commentaries over Deutschlandsender III. This new facility operated an all-powerful shortwave transmitter from Berlin.
Through his media services, Pascasio earned prominence from the NAZI authorities and in the Spanish-speaking world. This lasted until his sudden and unexpected disappearance from Germany, where he left behind two small children and their German mother.
In the Canary Islands he is still posthumously praised by writer and novelist Daniel María who describes him as “one of the most important personalities, not only in the Canary Islands but also internationally.”
Recently, Nura Niebla, Councillor for Culture and Education in La Gomera, also honoured Pascasio by saying that “in his life Pascasio experienced both Nazism in Germany and Franco’s fascist suppression in Spain. Pascasio was a writer, an internationally renowned radio commentator, and a keen supporter of reforestation. He was interested in the occult sciences and was also a co-founder of Filii Christi, the Theosophical Society established in the 1920s in La Gomera.”
